Spinal Cord Stimulation

What is Spinal Cord Stimulation?

Spinal cord stimulation, or SCS therapy, is a treatment that involves implanting a small device to send low levels of electrical pulses directly to the spinal cord in order to relieve chronic pain. The procedure is minimally invasive and can offer immediate relief for chronic back pain.

How does it work?

Spinal cord stimulators feature thin wires called electrodes and a small battery pack resembling a pacemaker, known as the generator. The electrodes are positioned in the epidural space, located between the spinal cord and vertebrae. The generator is implanted under the skin, typically near the buttocks or abdomen. These devices enable patients to control the delivery of electrical impulses with a remote control when they experience pain. Both the remote control and its antenna remain outside the body.

Traditional spinal cord stimulators replace the sensation of pain with light tingling, called paresthesia. For patients who find these paresthesiae uncomfortable, newer devices like the WaveWriter Alpha offer “sub-perception” stimulation that cannot be felt.

What is spinal cord stimulation used for?

Spinal cord stimulation is typically considered when nonsurgical pain treatments have not provided adequate relief. These stimulators can be used to manage various forms of chronic pain, including:

  • Chronic back pain
  • Post-surgical pain
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Arachnoiditis
  • Heart pain
  • Pain after an amputation
  • Perineal pain
  • Visceral abdominal pain
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Disc herniation
  • Mild Scoliosis
  • Spondylosis
  • Spondylolisthesis
  • Mild Spinal Stenosis
  • Radiculopathy

Who is a good candidate for SCS?

A good candidate for spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is someone who has chronic pain that's not well managed by other treatments, and has the following pain type and treatment history.

Pain Type

Has chronic pain that's debilitating and lasts longer than six months. This pain can be caused by nerve damage, arthritis, spinal stenosis, or other conditions. Some common conditions that SCS can help with include:

  • Chronic leg or arm pain
  • Diabetic neuropathy
  • Failed back surgery syndrome
  • Complex regional pain syndrome
  • Arachnoiditis

Treatment history

You have tried other pain management treatments, such as medications or nerve blocks, but they weren't effective.
